The Secret to a Happy Client

I think I just figured out clients–so, here goes:

Clients ask for a forest by describing a tree. When you finally produce a forest for them, they’re really just looking for that one tree that they described. The secret to making them happy is putting the tree front and center … Just be sure not to neglect the forest.

There’s a Wordpress meetup right here in Mobile, AL on Saturday, Oct. 25th at 7pm. I’d like to make it, but I’m not 100% right now.

I’ve been looking for an image gallery solution … The Wordpress Codex suggests the YAPB plugin to turn Wordpress into a photoblog. I want to give this a try eventually. Of course, the Wordpress Codex also makes some other suggestions.

I still contend that the only point of the Internet is free stuff. So, here’s to the Internet: 30 sites to download free royalty-free stock photos.

I launched a new design for my work site, dannylipford.com. Even though there were plenty of compromises (rotating flash panel on homepage,) it’s the happiest I’ve ever been with my professional work. Particularly, I like the sparse design (especially on these pages,) related posts feature on each article (used Yet Another Related Post plugin), and the most popular posts (used Popularity Contest plugin) on the homepage and on each category page. Let me know your thoughts, and feel free to be brutally honest.

I’m watching the Chrome presser right now … Yes, it’s going to be big. Super fast (their demo of static pages was 70ms compared with IE’s 200ms), “application mode” (you have to see the demo but REAL cool), incredible UI (there’s some great smart features). I just feel sorry for the IE8 dev team. No one’s going to care much about anything they have to say. Update: It’s available (Download Google Chrome), I’ve downloaded it and am installing.

Suprise, Suprise

For once, all the Google Browser rumors have died down, and lo and behold, Google’s gone and announced a browser. It’ll either be huge or nothing. I can’t wait to try it out.

Update: I just installed it, and I’m posting this from my iPhone. Very cool/well-done app.

Make my logo bigger cream - touches on ever design cliche out there. I love the handshake. (via Bittbox)

Don’t you hate those crappy color pickers that don’t follow the Adobe model seen in Photoshop? I do. John Dyer has put together a javascript version of the Adobe color picker that you can use on the web. It rocks. (Via Ajaxian)

There’s a new image resizing technology out there that blows my mind. It’s called seam carving. Here’s a working web tool that lets you give seam carving a try (via Photojojo). I can’t stress how unbelievable it is. Did I mention it’s amazing? Probably the biggest innovation in digital photo retouching in years. I can’t be the only one who wants a Photoshop plugin for this.

I just upgraded this site to the latest version of WordPress, 2.3. So far, I really like it. Coolest new feature: tags. Now, I just need to add them to my templates.

There’s a new web analytics provider out there, Clicky (via Bitbox). It drills into even more detail — The only problem is that I don’t really care to see more detail; I’d rather see bigger pictures like average monthly uniques or average daily uniques or a graph of every month’s unique visitors. It seems the more these analytical software drill down, the more they leave the big picture up to the user to calculate and track. Bleh!
